Racism is a common issue in everyday life. It means,"The hatred or intolerance of other races or cultures". There is racism almost everywhere in the world. It keeps people from moving up in society, from getting certain jobs, from making certain friends, and from getting oppertunities that people of other races might get.
In Maya Angelou's book, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, racism is a key issue. Because she is a black young woman, she experiences alot of racism throughout her life. Racism tries to prevent Maya from getting the jobs she wants, like when she tries to become a Conductorette of a San Francisco Street Car. She eventually gets the job thanks to her hard work and determination. It tries to prevent her from having a happy life, but because of her willpower she does. Racism is as big of an issue as ever now. There is an African American man running for president, and I'm sure that because of that, there will be much less people that think lowly of African Americans.
